Cited for her every-day priceless employee values, Gloria Clayton was recognized as Springhill Medical Center’s Manager of the Year during hospital week. On May 17, Springhill presented Gloria with various prizes, including added vacation time and a plaque for this annual award. She has been with the hospital for 14 years and is currently Springhill’s Director of Laboratory Services.
According to her nomination submission, Gloria creates a positive work environment for her staff of 65 on three shifts.
Additional comments from her submission: “Gloria is extremely competent, and her work ethic sets an example for all lab employees. Her high energy is contagious. She sets high standards for herself and her staff to exceed all expectations related to procedural requirements and customer care. Gloria has been instrumental in implementing many policies and procedures that improve productivity, efficiency, staff morale and overall satisfaction. Gloria has taken the Laboratory to the forefront of technology – with many of those updates firsts for our city. She has accomplished so much with intelligence, integrity, compassion, and always a desire to do things correctly. Her knowledge of the field of laboratory medicine and how the lab integrates with the healthcare system is obvious.
“Gloria's impressive efforts in mentoring have resulted in career developments for many individuals. She has encouraged and helped many of her staff to further their education … phlebotomist to nurse, technician to technologist, and technologist to physician's assistant. Most importantly, she is able to recruit the best medical technology students graduating from the lab's training program while retaining her most experienced personnel. Gloria is an excellent mentor and values mentorship to help keep the laboratory in the minds of students of all ages. She participates in the mentorship program for college students and ensures that she speaks to each student personally.
“We respect her and know that no one is working harder for our benefit, for the benefit of the patients, and for the benefit of the hospital than Gloria Clayton. She treats all employees with respect and kindness and makes an effort to know the person behind the employee number. Her interactions with employees are always fair, especially when problems arise. She is able to provide helpful feedback due to her years of experience. As a leader, she is always optimistic about the changes that inevitably occur and exhibits a calm demeanor.

She respects everyone at Springhill from the patients to her colleagues, she exemplifies integrity in the workplace, is very caring and compassionate to anyone she is in contact with, she makes excellent choices, is a great listener, shows empathy, smiles often and never minds adding to her workload. Through incredibly stressful times, she always tries to stay upbeat, look for positive outcomes, and focus on the good. Gloria is our Manager with a Big Heart!
