It is with great pleasure that we announce the 2023 Nurse of the Year Award recipient, Mechele Harris, BSN, Assistant Nurse Manager Unit 4200.
“Mechele is an awesome person that just so happens to be a talented nurse,” said Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive Mr. Paul Read. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Mechele for these last 19 years and during that time I watched her set the bar in every aspect of providing care.”
Mrs. Harris has been part of the SMC family for 19 years and is certified to administer chemotherapy.
“I have always been driven to provide good customer service. My goal is to make each patient’s stay as comfortable as possible,” Mrs. Harris explains. It is her mantra to always treat others in a kind manner. “Remember to always treat others the way that you want to be treated and hopefully it’s with kindness.”
It’s the family atmosphere at Springhill that she values most about her work environment. “I have been at SMC a long time and have seen firsthand how we support one another during the happiest of times, as well as the most difficult.”
Originally from Mobile, she and her husband of 16 years, Cedrick Harris, have three children: Xavier, age 13, Carmen Jonna (deceased), and Braxton, age 5. In addition, she has an identical twin sister who is also an RN in Mobile. “We are often approached by people in the hospitals excited to talk and catch up, but we have to tell them ‘I'm her twin.’"
