As we work to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention, we focus on: education about early detection, supporting research, and promoting support programs. It’s a time to honor survivors, remember loved ones, and take action to potentially save lives. The American Cancer Society estimates that 310,720 new U.S. cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in 2024. In addition, an estimated 42,250 women will die from breast cancer in 2024. The average risk of a woman developing breast cancer is about 1 in 8. Here’s how you can make a difference:
Talk about the risk factors
Education is key. The more you know about a health condition and its risk factors, the more you can share with family and friends. Common risk factors for breast cancer include: obesity, lack of exercise, alcohol, and family genetics.
Post on social media
You can share posts on social media by following pages that advocate for breast cancer awareness and research. Share facts about breast cancer, how to check for breast cancer, the importance of mammograms, and current studies or statistics.
Write cards and letters
Hand-written cards and letters are great to show your encouragement, love, and support. Encourage others to do the same. Drop off your letters at a chemo center or to anyone you know who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Participate in an event
You can donate, volunteer, or participate in a local or national breast cancer awareness event, such as Race for the Cure, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, or SMC’s Pink Party in October.
Donate to research
Whether you want to put together a fundraiser or you want to donate from your personal earnings, any amount can help the cause. Top charities that fund research and patient support:
- American Cancer Society
- Breastcancer.org
- Breast Cancer Research Foundation
- Living Beyond Breast Cancer
- National Breast Cancer Foundation
