More good news for SMC's heart surgery program. We continue to earn the 3-star isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery rating and 3 stars for the Multiprocedural Overall (all analyzed procedures + aortic valve + mitral valve +/-CABG) category. Approximately 2-4% of hospital participants receive 3 stars in more than one surgical category. Springhill Medical Center has maintained the 3-Star rating for Overall CABG surgery for multiple years — since June 2023.
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) rated Springhill Medical Center’s CABG program with 3 Stars (the highest). This Overall Quality rating is based on patient outcomes July 2022 – June 2025 and marks the program’s fourth consecutive three-star achievement for overall CABG quality and two for two for Multiprocedural, which has only been rated twice.
"Earning and sustaining this rating was a goal for us from the onset," said Mr. Jeff St. Clair, President/CEO of Springhill Medical Center. "We always want the best possible outcomes for our patients, so we applaud the outstanding efforts by our surgeons, Dr. Lewis Wilson and Dr. Charles Wyatt, and the entire team to keep this a priority.”
This STS comprehensive rating system allows for comparisons regarding the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. The latest data analysis for CABG surgery includes more than 1,000 hospital participants from all 50 states, as well as internationally.
The STS National Database is the specialty’s leader in quality improvement, and it provides a true national benchmark for cardiothoracic surgery. It is one of the largest and most comprehensive clinical registries, with data on nearly 10 million procedures from more than 4,300 surgeons, including 95% of adult cardiac surgery procedures.
